THE THRILL-SEEKERS 7 – Mourning

THE THRILL-SEEKERS 7 – Mourning

Welcome back, WORLD Travelers!

It’s been a busy week.  In this installment of The Thrill-Seekers, we get a closer look at Alicia Patterson through her mother’s eyes.  I thought it was important to see Alicia when she was alive and learn something more about her.  However, because every word is important in a three-panel strip, be sure to look for nuggets of information that may be important to the plot later on.

Not only was I glad to get Pastor into a new setting, I was glad to give him a change of clothes.  I decided to outfit him in the classic sports jacket/turtleneck combo that Al Williamson had Phil Corrigan rock with such elan when he was illustrating Secret Agent Corrigan from 1967 to 1980.  I hope I have such a successful and productive run.

Finally, the tall, skinny detective is my nod to WORLD OF HURT tech guru, Andy Haworth, who helped me get this site started in the first place.  I didn’t have money to pay him, so I offered to make him a detective in the series.  Hopefully I did him justice.

Lord have mercy, you’re gonna get us run out of this state!

  2. Hey,
I am a product of the SC educational system. Well maybe that proves your point. I really like the way you’ve implied lines, without drawing them. Nice as always. I love Pastors change of clothes very Williamson-esque.

-Guess Who? – Dang, there goes my shot at the governor’s seat. You didn’t know that in the first plot I wrote for WORLD OF HURT, Pastor took on a Strom Thurmond/George Wallace pastiche. True story!

-The Pirate Musketeer – See, Guess Who?, I rest my case. :)

Brilliant work! I’ve never had a character drawn like me before, but you nailed it. It looks like me in about 15 years (with the added toughness of a POINT BLANK-era Lee Marvin!) You even got my big ears in there!

More than that, the story is gaining nice depth, especially with the S.C. reference.

The tech guru sent me over to check out the site. You’ve peaked my interest. Definitely a new add to my RSS feed. And you totally nailed his look in the detective – love it!

Andy- Guess Who? helped me refine the likeness. I was trying to add a little mileage, so I’m glad you liked it.

Like I said in my mission statement, I think there’s a lot of depth to be mined from the early-to-mid ’70s, because we were coming out of such a dark decade that had started with such promise. Allusions to South Carolina’s reliance on the textile industry add a bit of context, because we all know how that turned out.

So if anyone coming to my site has doubts about what more can be done with the Blaxploitation genre and asks, “Blaxploitation? Seriously?,” then I can answer, “Yes. Blaxploitation, seriously.”

(By the way, your comment also reminds me that we’ll soon learn exactly what city Pastor operates from.)

Hey! Recommended this site by A. Summey. Can’t wait to see more. I’m loving the cops from the last frame – I think you’re capturing the spirit of the blaxploitation films perfectly. Any plans for a tough “Foxxy” to complement Pastor?

  9. I would think Pastor would be rockin’ more of a natural those days. What’s up with that?

  10. admin says:

MannieJo- Aah, good ol’ Summey. Thanks for stopping by. Down the pipeline, I do plan on expanding the world of Isaiah “Pastor Hurt. Within “The Thrill-Seekers” storyline I may introduce a character(s) that would be my gateway into the “Bad-Ass Female” genre, and other more outre genres, of Blaxploitation. However that would be a ways off.

In the meantime, if you dig the likes of “Foxy Brown,” I’d recommend you check out my man, John Aston’s webcomic, “Rachel Rage” at http://www.oldetownecomix.com. “Rachel Rage” features a thick, Afro-puff wearin’ sista taking on The Man in a seamy and steamy Southern locale that’s as hot and funky as James Brown’s armpit. Although I’m in a world-shaking blood feud with Aston, I encourage folks to check it out.

    Angry White Man –

First, a shout out to The Juice*, and then I’ll address your tonsorial query:

    Ahem…

VIVA LA JUICE*, AND WELCOME TWEETERS!!

Coming straight from Tampa Bay, The Juice* is THE spot for your daily dose of pop culture and Vitamin Snark. If you ain’t been there lately, you are hopelessly out of touch and probably think “Where’s The Beef?” and “Waaassssupp!” references are au courant. Get you some Juice*, fool!!

Re: “The Natural.” There’s more than one kinda natural, AWM. In the ’70s, I think Duke Hair Care products even had an advert that showcased the different styles. I’ll see if I can dig up that ad and do a post on it. Heck, my uncle rocks “The Pastor” to this day, minus the sideburns, and looks damn good in it.

    Jay,
Great work! I was talking to Andy and Noelle about Haworth’s appearance in the strip today, so wanted to check it out. Very nice. I’m anxious to see where the story is headed.
