Didn’t know about Afrodi…YOU! Aw, you’re seriously missing out! If the mighty Rodbuddah didn’t know about Afrodisiac, than I did a HUGE public service with this post. However, Jim Rugg’s art shows up in places you don’t expect. I read The PLAIN Janes published through DC Comics’ short-lived Minx imprint, simply because I thought it had the best art of all their offerings. It wasn’t until I met the man that I realized Jim Rugg drew it.

Make sure you check out his LiveJournal site, too. He updates it rather infrequently, but there are some gems in there, too.

There really is no comparison between Pastor and Afrodisiac. Afrodisiac, while a heart felt homage, is firmly grounded in humor. A parody of the genre. With Pastor, so far, you’ve been able put out a story that is ignorant to history’s view of Blaxploitation. Instead you have a story that takes itself seriously, while sincerely portraying the strengths and weaknesses we so easily point out today.

If I could get a commission illustration from Jim Rugg of that…wow!

I was actually a little reluctant to do the Afrodisiac post, because I didn’t want to pale in comparison. But you’re right about the tonal differences, and like I said, the greater crime was not sharing Afrodisiac with other fans of the Blaxploitation genre.
