THE THRILL-SEEKERS 31 – The Third Mrs. Belmont

THE THRILL-SEEKERS 31 – The Third Mrs. Belmont

Well, I got my Mac Mini back this weekend, thanks to the technical wizardry of Lexington’s own, Mr. Mac, so I’m back in business.  Again, a big thanks to Stephen Lindsay for stepping in to help with the lettering last week.

This week, I’d like to give a real special shout-out to one of the early fans of the strip, Marye Stone “Cold Fox” Dahlman who provided the French translation for me.  In more ways than one, Marye’s been an inspiration to everyone who knows her, and continues to be with her understated, quiet strength and positivity.  Also, she’s married to a guy named Thor, which is pretty cool, too.

Somehow I got it in my head that Ned’s wife might be foreign, and out of that grew the idea that she might be a little dismissive of Pastor, and mutter something under her breath in French, only for Pastor to throw her off-guard by responding in kind.  Marye is fluent in French and has taught it at the university level.  So besides providing a bang up translation, she told me more than I ever wanted to know about the proper version of “fucker” that should be used in this context.  Thanks again, and now you can tell Nicholas you made it to the funny pages.

I’ve got a rockin’ blog post this Friday, so make sure you come back in two days, ’cause I wanna show you something that absolutely blew my mind.

  1. Mrs. Thor says:

I love a badass who can speak French… and I think the third Mrs. Belmont probably does, too.

Beautiful use of the phrase “Sad Sack Mother Fuckers”.

    ^ LOL. love it.

Also, FYI, the comic is messed up in my rss feed today. I have a dark background color set and the white parts of the comic’s background were transparent– made the whole thing unreadable. Haven’t had that problem before though.

Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll repost the image again tonight or tomorrow in a different format. Let me know by Friday or so if you still have the same problem. Much appreciated.

    HA! Pastor is the man!

  7. Kris LK says:

I like how his knowledge of French seems to have changed her entire perception of Pastor. I’m sure the dialogue between them will be great.

  8. Coyote Trax says:

Excellent touch with the French, I love it!

  9. Doug G. says:

Pastor’s one complex dude. The parlez vous-ing is an interesting wrinkle – where and when did he pick that up? I’ve got one theory, but I’ll stay quiet and see if that angle plays out later. Nice work as always, sir.

Thank Mrs. Thor for her great work with the French. She made my mad idea into a reality. It was something that had been rattling around in my head, but I only decided to go through with it last weekend. However, it fits in with the backstory I have for Pastor. Doug G. and I might be on the same wavelength with that.

On a related note, it didn’t hit me until today that it might make perfect sense for a place named “Pointe Blanc” to have a certain population of French speakers.

    Parker-
I missed your comment before, but that was one of the first conversations I had with Mrs. Thor. I think the direct translation is “pathetic,” but I took a little creative license and used “sad sack” instead.
