THE THRILL-SEEKERS 37 – “You Are My Number One Guy”

THE THRILL-SEEKERS 37 – “You Are My Number One Guy”

A return to panel borders in this episode.  I was struggling to come up with a name, when I remembered Jack Palance and Jack Nicholson using the “You are my number one…guy” in the 1989 Tim Burton film, Batman.  Somehow it seemed appropriate.

I gotta be honest, I really struggled with this one, y’all.  I had another fate in mind for Danny, but no matter how much I drew and re-drew it, I just couldn’t make the original layout work.  In the end, it’s not too bad, but it’s not my strongest either.

Big-ups to Dwight and Swain at SiDEBAR Nation for posting their interview with me, and thanks to everyone who came by based on that interview.  I hope you continue to join us.

Also, I’ll see you on Friday with a blog post, but I hope everyone has a safe, and joyous Christmas.

After I listened to your interview on Sidebar, I typed in your url and began reading from the beginning of the story. I’m hooked! I started reading the strip on my lunch break and couldn’t stop. Keep up the good work. You’ve just got yourself a new fan.

  2. A'Omare says:

i like movement in the final panel. you did good brutha. Merry Christmas!

  3. Summey says:

Your going to post on Christmas. Talk about dedication. I think the strip is very good. It does what it needs to and it looks very good. I like the fact that the goons are still admiring Pastor’s car. If you wouldn’t say anything no one would even know.

  4. Parker says:

Not to be an ass, but last week you said Pastors car was a Pontiac GTX. But if you look at the truck it seems to be spelling out Plymouth.

Now to earn my “No-Prize”: Since most everything in Pastors life comes from performing favors, why can’t the same be said for his car. On a previous case Pastor’s car was involved in an accident that left the rear end totaled. His client on that case had a brother-in-law that did body repair work. He was able to get the car restored, but is still waiting on an original Pontiac rear end piece (I know squat about cars). For the time being he supplemented it with the rear trunk panel from a Plymouth.

    So do I win a No-Prize?

  5. Jay Potts says:

    Parker-
You are correct, sir. I actually mis-spoke last week, because there is no “Pontiac GTX.” Pontiac had the GTO, and Plymouth had the GTX. I transposed the names. My fault.

Besides, Pastor would insist on OEM parts if he did have to have repairs. :)

    mfdoom99-
Always glad to have new readers, and I’m definitely glad you enjoyed what you found here. One of Dwight and Swain’s prior guests referred to them as the comic industry’s version of NPR’s Terry Gross. They really do their research, and manage to be informative and entertaining at the same time. They really know how to spotlight the creators on their show and bring out the best in them. I found it a real honor to be invited on, especially since they’ve had real greats in the industry like Adam Hughes and, most recently, Bryan Hitch featured on SiDEBAR. That’s really elite company.

P.S. Love that “mfdoom” handle, by the way!

    A’Omare-
That panel should really be spotlighted more. I’m gonna be tempted to re-do this strip for the collection. Many thanks, though, and have a great Christmas, too.

I didn’t say it would be a LONG post, but I’ll post something. :)

Jay, I actually like this layout a bunch. Shows your great sense of timing. Plus, how awesome is it that Pastor got ready for some asskicking in what, five minutes tops? Not that Pastor isn’t always ready to asskick or anything.

  10. Jessica says:

Uh, I don’t see the problem in the last panel Jay. I’m lovin’ how Pastor’s pants are fitting him and the outline of his arm muscles:)

Besides, everyone knows that in the ’60’s, there were only two other cars made in America that had positraction, and independent rear suspension, and enough power to make these marks. One was the Corvette, which could never be confused with the Buick Skylark. The other had the same body length, height, width, weight, wheel base, and wheel track as the ‘64 Skylark, and that was the 1963 Pontiac Tempest.

A newbie from the SIDEBAR interview. I was listening to the pod on the way to work this morning and since it’s Christmas eve I’ve done no work but 100% “World of Hurt” instead. As I listened to the pod I was hoping it was going to be a b+w strip, I’m still a fan of what can be done with just ink as per: Simon Bisely’s ‘ABC Warriors’ in the 80’s and Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City’. Great stuff Jay…looking forward to more ongoing, unfolding, funkomic!

great stuff! love the interview too on sidebar!
    those guys rule!!

    Jessica-
I actually asked my fiancee if she was posting as you. Your comment sounded exactly like something she would say! Needless to say, I’m glad I could provide a little beefcake for the ladies.

P.S. My fiancee posts as “Guess Who” on here, and she posted the previous comment about Pastor’s pants fitting him nicely. Unfortunately, she didn’t log me out and posted the comment under my name. Just in case you were wondering why I found Pastor’s pants so fetching. :)

  15. Jay Potts says:

    MAS-
Glad you came over, MAS, and I think you coined a new phrase with “funkomic.” Mind if I use it?

    aleroart-
Dwight and Swain do indeed kick much interviewing ass. They were able to bring a lot of Candor from Bryan Hitch in their latest interview that I had never heard or read anywhere else.

  16. Guess Who? says:

    Jay,

Thanks for clearing up any confusion on the comment about Pastor’s pants.

    – Your fiancee

  17. MAS says:

    Jay,
You’re welcome to the term “Funkomic” as long as you use it for good and not…well you can use it for evil too :)

  18. Jessica says:

    Jay,

It’s good to see an artist remember that there are female fans who like to see a little beefcake now and then. We see way overkill on the female anatomy, and it seems a bit one sided. Thanks for playing a part in rectifying that unjust situation. Power to the People!
