THE THRILL-SEEKERS 40 – “Queensberry Rules”

Pastor doesn’t fight fair.  When Pastor fights, he fights to destroy his opponent in the most efficient, brutal way possible.  In a way, these fight scenes are the hardest part of the series.  Since Pastor doesn’t “quip” during fights, I feel like I’m leaving you all a little short-changed in the dialogue department.  However, to maintain some of the pacing, I’m trying to keep the violence somewhat Hobbesian, i.e. “nasty, brutish, and short.”

  1. Tight pants + Nut Punch = Death. Pastor fights to win by trying to kill the enemy with the first blow. Is he Jamaican?

  2. Jay Potts says:

    Tracy-
Oh, he ain’t dead, yet. But very soon he will be. Of course, Pastor’s not Jamaican, because there’s no straight razor. ;)

You know, I really appreciate the fact that Pastor doesn’t “quip” — although there’s a tradition of great comic book (and movie, etc.) heroes who say hilarious smart-ass things during fight scenes, it’s refreshing to have a stone-cold badass like Pastor silently dispatching the bad guys for a change.

i like the silence. it “says” enough. i used to hate looking at comics and cartoons and they would try and blurt out something catchy and then hit someone. you try that with me and i’ma steal one on you. lol. the black radiating around the action was a good ideal. made it more impactful to me.

  5. Jay Potts says:

    mike-
Thanks! I figure he’s enough of a smart-ass elsewhere, anyway. If someone ever does a film adaptation, I’d want the fights to look as real as possible. You know, nasty, inelegant, painful, panicky, and awkward melees. Or something along the lines of that classic hallway fight sequence in Oldboy. I’ll try to find a YouTube link to that scene on Twitter later tonight.

I love this comic, can’t wait til you collect this in a trade or something.

Love the background in the last panel. That shows just how hard Pastor gut punched him!
I finally got the first few pages of my teen werewolf webcomic up, and I don’t know how you do it Jay. Excellence week in and week out. I’ve had to omitt background scenes (hope to get back later and revise panels) just to keep to a schedule. Don’t worry about Pastor’s silent but deadly demeanor. Coming up with fresh quips that don’t sound corny is a chore in itself, which I have yet to master :)

“When you have to shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.” — Tuco, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

If dude had a chance to start with, I’m thinking the “boy” didn’t help his cause so much.

And for gritty, real fight scenes, I submit the clash of champions — Dan Dority and “The Captain” — from “Deadwood.” Two big guys slugging, rolling, gouging and gassing out — and *then* it gets ugly. WARNING: Last 90 seconds or so are definitely NOT for the squeamish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blki-DISUis

  9. MellM says:

I agree, I think “Boy?” took it over the edge. We all know what he meant by that. Pastor don’t play that. All I can do smh because its n*** punching and a** kicking time.

  10. Guess Who says:

This is my new favorite picture of Pastor’s face. His expression says, “I’m gonna have to hurt you. Bad.” It’s like dispatching these goons is more of an annoyance before he gets to his real target.

  11. Summey says:

    Guess who,

Does that last panel remind you of what Lane did to the Vols, this week?

  12. BABBIE says:

YOUR WORK IS GREAT AND I KNOW YOU WILL GO GREAT PLACES. KEEP THE FAITH AND HARD WORK.

  13. Jay Potts says:

    Babbie-
Thank you. Do I know you? You seem VERY familiar… :) Honestly, I would be anywhere without you and your unconditional love and support throughout the years. You may not have always understood what I was trying to do, but you gave me a strong foundation, so you trusted my judgment and let me find my way. I can’t thank you and Dad enough for that.
