  • @vinyl4giants However, the first image of the aliens taken at the child's birthday party is truly one of cinema's most startling reveals. #
  • @vinyl4giants Aliens with a fatal water allergy invading a planet that is 75% water is like Superman attacking a planet made of Kryptonite. in reply to vinyl4giants #
  • My condolences to all effected. Make #Webcomics. Fuck The (Middle)Man. RT @bleedingcool DC’s Zuda Line Slashed http://bcool.bz/aUW81P #

Time 4 Sum Aksion (Figures)!*

It’s the return of the WORLDOFHURTONLINE.COM Friday blog update. Huzzah!

Today, I thought I’d share with you something I received in my e-mail inbox that impressed the hell outta me.  As you know, I’m one of the biggest Afrodisiac boosters around.  Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca captured lightning in a bottle with their stories that invoke the best of Silver and Bronze Age superhero comic books with the sexy, dangerous street-level sensibilities of Blaxploitation.  I’ve been vocal about how its influenced me, but it appears that I’m not the only one.  The talented Walter Harris, a self-described “Account Supervisor by occupation, Action Figure Customizer by inclination” sent me these photos of this awesome Afrodisiac custom action figure he created:

Afrodisiac pic 2

Afrodisiac pic 3

Walter did a phenomenal job with the details in this piece.  The denim texture of Afrodisiac’s pants, the intense knife-you-in-the-ribs-as-soon-as-look-at-you gaze, and the sweet touch of the flocked Afro a la the old school GI Joe dolls really make this custom job really stand out.

Afrodisiac pic 1

I’ve already inquired about commissioning a custom Pastor figure from Walter, so if it all comes through, expect it to be on display with me as I make the convention rounds in the near future.

If you’d like to see more of Walter Harris’ skillful handiwork, you might want to drop by the links below.  (HINT: I bet the first link will really make the kid in you want to COME OUT AND PLAAAYYY-AAAAAAYYY!)

TODAY IN BLAXPLOITATION: Happy Birthday, Richard “Shaft” Roundtree!

Today is the 68th birthday of Richard Roundtree, best known for his portrayal of John Shaft in Shaft, Shaft’s Big Score, and Shaft In Africa.  What more can be said?  If you’re dropping by here, you know the score.  With the character of John Shaft, Roundtree set a new standard for Black leading men:  Smooth, dangerous, and not inclined to take shit off anyone.

“WORD” OF HURT – Tweets Of the Week for 2010-07-11

  • @hermanos No, that would mean at least five minutes of SDCC would be focused on COMICS, not movies, and that can't happen at Comic-Con. #

  • @freshalina I know Chris Brown wants to deliver another hit…so I guess he's counting on Keyshia having slow reflexes. #
  • Except for Alice Eve, I can't tell one blandly handsome Abercrombie & Fitch-esque cast member of "X-Men:First Class" from another. #
  • @citizenDave @julianlytle I agree. Wearing your favorite player's jersey is just mainstream cosplay and fantasy football is D&D with pads. #

  • @hermanos Word! The South is to barbecue as Trey Songz is to sex-plus talent and less ripping off Jamie Foxx and-aww, scrap that analogy! #

SKETCHBLOG: The Arch-villainy Of The Monarch

I met Jeremy Brooks at HeroesCon, and if I’m not mistaken, he was the first guy to commission a sketch from me. He kinda threw me for a loop when he asked for a sketch of the Monarch from The Venture Bros.  I was familiar with the show, but I largely had to pull the character from memory. (At least until Jeremy brought over costume reference in the form of another Monarch sketch he commissioned from Eric Canete.  Although it proved to be useful in figuring out some of the details, having an Eric Canee sketch of the same character in front of me really amped up the pressure to do a good job.

Potts Monarch

Jeremy was kind enough to do me a solid and send a scan of the sketch after he got home, so I thought I’d share it with you.  I thought this one was pretty successful, largely because it’s such a big departure from my normal style, and still stayed true to the nature of Dr. Rusty Venture’s arch-nemesis.
