THE BLACK FIST 9 – Pistol Packin’ Mama

THE BLACK FIST 9 – Pistol Packin’ Mama

I’ve really come to like Vonetta Foster’s character.  She makes a great foil for Pastor.  They’re old friends and she knows him all-too well.  I enjoy the comfort level between the two and I actually let Pastor lighten up and relax a little when she’s around.  Vonetta might also be one of the few people- man or woman- who Pastor views as an equal.  I have a great backstory for Vonetta that I’ll have to get  around to incorporating into the strip, if possible.

  1. Can’t remember if I first saw the “other” Vonetta in Shaft In Africa or Eiger Sanction, but I know she made quite the impression on my young mind, that previously only had the bra section of the Sears catalog for “inspiration”.
I won’t say that your Vonetta has the same effect or that I’m typing with one hand, but it does bring back some fond memories of “hard times”, or would that be “hand times”?LOL

The middle panel is one of Pastor’s most handsome portraits. Perhaps that’s a reflection of Vonetta Foster?

The screen writing adage says that if you put the gun on the mantle in the first act, it had better go off in the third act. Intrigued …

    That’s a good insight Doug G!!!
Is it just me (or the three beers rattling around in me) or is ‘The Black Fist’ just a little more meatier than ‘The Thrillseekers’? (I hope I haven’t already said this??)
I get the impression we’re getting a lot more set up than before and it seems like a much richer work.

The Tough Second Album is going very well, Jay! :)

    Guess Who-
Thanks, but I liked the pencils a little better.

    Doug G-
“In the third act” or “by the third act.” If it’s the former, I might just be ahead of schedule. Oop, forget I said that. Move along!

    MAS-
Thank you, MAS. Good catch, because The Thrill-Seekers was simpler by design. I came up with the plot for The Black Fist first, but I realized it was a little too ambitious to start the webcomic with. I needed something a little more straightforward to introduce the characters and Pastor’s world and I thought The Thrill-Seekers story fit the bill better for that purpose. However, I did make some changes from my initial draft of The Black Fist to build off of relationships and developments from the previous storyline.

    Thanks again!

    “dollar” Bill-
Sometimes, I think I should have given Vonetta a name like “Ebony Jett,” so I could have spun her off into her own series or something, but I’m glad I could tribute Vonetta McGee, especially since she produced so many…happy memories.
