THE BLACK FIST 19 – End Of The Road

THE BLACK FIST 19 – End Of The Road

The car chase is over, but the action’s just begun.  The conclusion of the chase was tough to stage, but hopefully I made it clear enough.

And that is why they inevnted air bags.

  2. I like the abrupt ending of the chase. I also like how Isaiah doesn’t come off unscathed in this matter. It adds a level of realism. The continuity is tight. Well done.

The only thing I would call out is apparently this bridge has a grass embankment on the side. The previous episode made it look like the car was hundreds of feet open air above the street below (sort of like most NYC bridges). Yeah, I know, Nitpicky bastard:-)

    Summey-
And the shoulder belt. Also, whenever I look at this strip, I hear car alarms. even though I know they weren’t invented yet.

    Bighead Scientists-
The extent of Pastor’s injuries will have some impact (no pun intended) on how he’s able to handle what comes next.

I set up the jump in SketchUp, including the buildings, so the distance from the houses to the highway is true. However, I did cheat a little in the previous strip to heighten the tension by picking an angle that would hide the embankment. I think I may have cheated too by leaving out part of the grassy strip that may have been evident even from that angle.
    Good eye!

I see a weasly bastard trying to crawl away. I hope he doesn’t escape like Javier Bardem’s character in No Country for Old Men.

  6. Dre says:

Great strip, really captured the feeling and grand scope of things here

  7. Yeah a fabulous metal bending end to the chase, the tyres ripped off and are they head impacts in the windscreen!?
@Big headed Scientist: I agree, I like how Pastor is messed up from the impact too. Keeps the comic from enterring a surreal, superhero type of flavour!

  8. Scott T says:

Great job as always. I like that he is hurt and that it will play into the story as well, no superhero a-team bull. The chase seen is cool and well done, but its been several weeks and I’m ready for some story and word baloons! Waiting is so hard to do. oh and the grass embankment thing didn’t bother me a bit. Didnt notice until it was pointed out.

  9. Dave Flora says:

Wow. It’s one thing to run a guy off the road…it is something else entirely to go WITH them. Just the sort of thing Pastor would do!
Well done strip, Jay! I especially liked hearing about how you use Sketchup to help set up the scene….that’s an awesome little tool!

  10. Scott T says:

can someone tell me a little bit about sketch up? what is it used for?

  11. Jay Potts says:

    Scott T-
SketchUp is Google freeware that allows you to construct three-dimensional objects. It’s use is fairly intuitive, but the great thing about it is that people can leave their creations in a virtual warehouse for others to use. You can build or find everything from a 1939 Bentley to the starship Enterprise (take your pick on the version you want.) Here’s a link: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
It’s used by artists like Stuart Immonen and Joe Quesada to build environments and stage scenes that are consistent from panel to panel.
