Ooo … the plot thickens.
Not a huge surprise that they were tied to the masks (a little Manson Family history helps there). But didn’t expect to see Tricky Dick’s visage popping up here. And using it to try to frame Pastor is a totally unexpected twist that complicates things dramatically. Nice job.
Framed for a crime he did not commit. Pastor now has to prove his innocence and reak righteous vengence, while avoiding the cops. COOOOOL!!!!
Mmmmm. My memory is getting hazy in my old age. I seem to have forgotten what is going on. Have we met Harlan? Is that girl from the coctail party in the beginning? Hard to remember strips that I read a month ago. So … I guess a re-read is in order! Nothing wrong with that, been meaning to anyways.
OK, I am rereading it now and just want to point this out. I like how in the second strip the guy in the nixon mask says … “You gettin HURT … you all getting HURT … that’s the message were leaving”. Or something like that. Forshadowing maybe? Nice connection.
Jay, I think for anyone over 40 years old, the twist won’t be that much of a surprise. I could see where some of this was going from the start. That hasn’t ruined any satisfaction in watching Pastor deal with this hot potato of a plot. From one writer to another, trust your instincts. And keep up the great work.
All he has to say is look, if I was responsible for the person they shot why exactly would I be chasing someone wearing a Nixon mask. I’m not the one hiding my identity, they are. Sorry, legal advice:-)
The mask surprises, if only because I’d forgotten the opening strips by now.
But the line about “coming off that aspirin” baffles me.
I believe “come off of” basically means “hand over” or “give up.” So, he’s saying if you’re not going to give me the aspirin I asked for, I’ll go ahead and tell you what happened.
Hmmm…I’m baffled too? (Thanks for clearing up the aspirin thing Doug G) but why does finding the Nixon mask in THEIR car frame Pastor??
Intriguing to have the prospect of Pastor having to deal with the police, though…brown suits on standby!
Jay, for the final cut: The cops are on “Their” way. Sorry, to be a grammar nerd.
Yeah, sorry, but I’m pretty confused, too. I understand, though…when I tried my strip in a similar format, my readers got confused by what I thought was fairly simple stuff. This is not an easy medium! But I’m sure people reading three-panel strips in the paper had the same problem, only worse if they threw the paper out every week.
Earlier in the strip, as they were driving, they were talking to her about “what’s in the bag” and asking “you know how to use it, right?” I assumed at the time it was the rifle – but that’s obviously not the case.
We know that when they killed the richies, they called themselves the Black Fist — so they clearly want the world to think black militants did it (and, from the crackdown, it’s clear that worked). Now, they want to use the mask to frame a particular black person as being involved.
Did they have Pastor in mind specifically? Doesn’t seem likely to me. Seems like the chase may have just created a very convenient victim.
Somehow, I don’t think that gaggle of agitated white folks is going to spend too much time worrying about where exactly the mask was before she produced it. We’ve seen the community is already in an uproar over the “race-based” killings. Now, there are two more dead white folks and a big, scary black dude who chased them to their deaths.
I’m guessing that when a pretty white girl starts waving around the mask they read about in the newspapers, they won’t waste a lot of time on forensics.
Excellent point, Doug! We’ll see if it bears out that way. Makes good sense.
Great plot summary from the sleep-deprived Doug G.
Uh…what Doug G. said. Damn, that’s one hell of a synopsis! I couldn’t have said it any better myself.
