I really like how you’re keeping Pastor human and vulnerable, it makes him more courageous and heroic. Nothing against superheroes, but it’s nice to see Pastor reacting to all the chaos around him like a normal person would (by passing out!)
I agree Matt! He’s a realistic character in a blaxplotaion kind of world.
Heh. He’s on a blanket.
Hey … he’s already fucked up a perfectly good Lincoln. Jimmy’s not going to let him bleed all over his sweet ride, too.
I am liking this D.B. character.LOL
Great second panel, Jay!!! Jimmy Domino dispensing karma because of the damage to the Lincoln heheh, brillant!
I really like your vehicle art, reminds me of reading about Frank Miller having models of various cars he used and positioning them for reference. Do you do the same or is that another sketch up tool?
Matt S./Scott -
Thanks. I try to use Shaft as my benchmark, particularly the scene after he fails spectacularly in his first attempt to save Bumpy Jonas’ daughter. Shaft is shot, the bad guys get away, and he has to get medical attention. The literary version of Shaft is paradoxically more cruel, but comes across as more human, because the reader spends a lot of time in his head. My original take on Pastor was that he was always one step ahead of everyone else. Now, I’m inclined to approach him as skilled at quickly assessing a situation and improvising. As with any improvisation, sometimes it goes in a direction you didn’t want or expect, but you still have to play your way out of it.

Mistah Pete/Doug G. -
I almost forgot to add the blanket, but Doug’s right. Jimmy’s not type to kid around about something like that.

I wonder why…

My favorite part of that panel is Pastor’s grimace, which I think plays nicely against his neutral, blank expression when he passes out in the next panel.
I do have several model cars and car reference books, including the Lincoln seen in previous strips. They are holdovers from a previous project I was trying to launch a few years ago. Until recently, I had about 25 diecast, 1/18th scale model cars, but I sold most of them in a yard sale last year. For most of what you see, I do use SketchUp. However, the experience I gained learning to draw them by hand is invaluable in incorporating people and objects into the virtual backgrounds I create using SketchUp.

I see what you mean about Jimmy. He could carry his own strip easily. Great character. Funny too. Looks like we’re off to another great adventure….
Great stuff!!!! This week’s strip along with last week’s are two of my favorites.
Dre-
Thanks! I think I’m finally settling into a groove for The Black Fist.

Jay Kelley-
In my mind, Jimmy Domino is like the Joe Creole character played by Dick Anthony Williams in Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off. He’s generally a rat bastard and a loudmouth, but he has a lot of useful skills that can come in handy.
